Holiday update from Chimera Island!

With 2007 around the corner, celebration begins on Chimera Island! With a slower December in 2006, the date for this mod has been pushed back until its hopeful release at the St. Louis Warfactory Lan on January 13th & 14th. Work has progressed and below is a video for the new year and displaying the powerful cloth simulation possible with the PhysX card! Note the Cloth blimp to be seen in the hangar on Chimera Island!

Expect to see screen shots of more of the Island soon!

NetDevil Talks PhysX

PhysX + Netdevil

Kotaku has the skinny on a new Unreal Engine 3-based FPS from the makers of Auto Assault. It's rumored to feature fully destructible environments and takes place in a new urban setting. Sounds like it might be worth picking up - we'll deliver the details as soon as we hear more.

Infernal Partners With Eidos

Playlogic, developers of Infernal which was featured earlier here and here have announced a deal with Eidos for the publishing rights for the game. This is exciting news as the demos of Infernal I have seen are quite polished and seem fairly close to release. Eidos also acqured publishing rights to "Ancient Wars: Sparta".

The full press release can be found here.

Unreal Engine 3 Shines

In our earlier RoboBlitz story, we talked briefly about the Unreal 3 Engine and how the game was the first to be released based on the U3 engine.

In the past few weeks we have seen more releases based on the Unreal 3 Engine, including impressive titles such as Gears of War and Rainbow Six: Vegas. One of the new features in the U3 Engine is ample use of physics as evidenced by Roboblitz and Gears of War. Any guesses as to which physics package is written into the U3 engine?

You guessed it - Physx. While consoles are purpose built for gaming and have the dedicated horsepower for physics calculations, desktop processors are not purpose built for gaming / physics and bottlenecks are introduced if higher level physics are introduced. Hopefully we'll see some more hardware accelerated titles in the near future - not from a framerate perspective (which should benefit regardless) but from a gameplay quality perspective.
